Radio Diaries A multi award-winning US podcast that gives recording equipment to people and helps them tell their “extraordinary stories of ordinary life”. Start with the best-of episode, and then listen to any one of more than 20 episodes for a long-form version. Chats about ballroom dancing, the Mayan Indians, being a female impersonator on the Manchester club circuit and a wayward dachshund ensue. Two Cups of Tea iTunes Congenial podcast-maker Chris Heath, sounding like a less abrasive Arthur Smith, visits an interesting older person and talks with them about their life. FitzGerald won a Whicker award for this programme, and it’s easy to hear why. The meditation on death from one of the nurses – “I open a window, they say the soul goes out” – is stunningly moving. Over the course of one day we hear from carers, residents and day regulars at Pilgrims Hospice in Margate. This brilliant programme, by producer Cathy FitzGerald, was made in 2013 but only made it to Radio 4 last week. Let’s hope we start getting to the actual story soon. Why not start the whole thing with the door-breaking? By the time I got to the end of episode one, I was exhausted and had learned almost nothing. He stands by as Horst, in his 70s, breaks down a locked door to get to the Wächter diaries. We hear him getting on a train he arrives at the house where Wächter’s son, Horst, lives. He paints a scene using Wächter’s wife’s diary he explains how he got to know Wächter’s son he tells us he’s going on a journey. In fact, he seems to start his story about five times in the first episode. Sands is, he tells us, “going on a journey” (any producer who still thinks this is allowable should not be in their job) and then informs us where this journey will take him (ditto). Sounds good, except that this podcast, like the previous Intrigue series, suffers from a plethora of BBC problems. The Ratline, the second series of the BBC’s Intrigue podcast, follows international human rights lawyer Philippe Sands as he unpicks the story of Otto Wächter, a senior Nazi who was never brought to justice. Photograph: Graeme Robertson/The GuardianĪnother new high-profile podcast started last week. How fallible these systems are, how often they seem to get it wrong, even when we’re told they get it right. And, more troublingly, all Serial series also make us consider the systems around innocence and guilt. All of the Serial series make listeners consider whether anyone can be completely one or the other. So if you don’t seem completely innocent, you’ll probably end up guilty, even if only a little bit. Except you’re left with the uneasy feeling that it didn’t… We’re told that 96% of convictions are decided on a plea bargain. They chose to start with it, says Koenig, because it was “an example of the system actually working”. (This is only possible due to the access allowed to Koenig and the Serial team they spent a year in Cleveland and seem to have recorded almost everywhere.)Īnd the first case seems quite straightforward, almost comically unfair, an easy decision. This series – “one courthouse told week by week” – promises to take us through various individual cases, and through these to an understanding of the US justice system. Serial 3 makes you understand that what you really enjoy about Serial is Koenig and her team. The consistent empathy, the moral niggles, the revealing vignettes. Such beautiful language! It makes you remember that Serial is not only about the individuals it chooses to focus on – it’s about the production: the reporting, the writing, the asides. I had to keep stopping to go back, to play small parts over again, just for my own enjoyment. Koenig’s opening six-and-a-half-minute description of the building is quite astonishing, like a chapter from Dickens or Maupassant. Sarah Koenig, our producer/presenter, talks us through: “The elevator really runs the place,” she says and explains why. This is the high-rise building that contains the city’s justice department, from jail (in the basement) to courthouses (the higher the floor, the more serious the crime). We are at the Justice Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Estelle’s journey takes her to a run-down shipping depot and a rainy field dotted with windmills, all filled with compelling material for your journal. After a leisurely stroll to capture all I could of the gorgeous little village, I was eager to see what else the world had to offer.įor the first few hours, I was captivated. Decorations from a party last night still hang in a tree, and signs of the village’s lived-in past are everywhere. The courtyard where you’re asked to gather your first recordings is staged perfectly. It’s only the first month of 2023, and Season already seemed like the kind of game I’d be convincing people to play for the rest of the year. It’s peaceful, and Estelle chimes in with observations about the subjects you’re recording, building the world slowly and subtly. You can take all the time you want to compose shots and arrange them in a journal. Outside, you’re introduced to Season’s simple camera and audio recorder and asked to capture your hometown before leaving forever. Once you’ve made your choices, Estelle leaves with an emotional goodbye. Estelle looks through her home and describes evocative memories and sensations tied to significant objects stashed throughout. Doing so means Estelle’s mother has to give up five memories of her own - one for each sense. Your character Estelle and her mother are making a pendant to protect Estelle’s mind on the journey ahead. Reviewed on PS5 with a code provided by the publisher.Season opens just before you leave home to collect memories of the world as the season ends, an ominous event that’s more gestured at than explained. Season is a calming, pensive adventure that's as beautiful as it is quaint. Although it doesn't always live up to its narrative, there's something quite special about how its narrative and adventure unfolds. That hasn't stopped me from finding Season quite the memorable experience, mostly for its peaceful and idyllic exploration and unexpected darkness. Some elements the developer assures me should be interactable are also just plain not working, so what should have been a 6-12 hour experience has taken me far upwards of that as I struggle to solve the core mystery with the game serving me technical curveballs. I've had to undergo a few complete restarts to make maps load correctly, or to force the photos I've plastered across my journal to not show the same image. Unfortunately, my experience with Season has been plagued by a number of (what I hope to be) pre-release bugs. For the most part, that's fine, but there are moments where blindly cycling around the valley could have been tampered by better notetaking - particularly when some of the cues are a little more obtuse. I also wish there was a touch more to a quest log or a better option for notetaking, especially as the game really doesn't tell you anything about what it expects from you. A goat's bray cuts through the otherwise eaceful countryside scene, some windchimes play a particularly melodious tune, a monkey surprises you in a shrine… suddenly you're leaning in to capture any sound in case it's helpful to building out your documentation. It also makes you appreciate the little snatches of audio you find. It's stylized, with an almost hand-drawn charm that makes you want to capture everything you see that's interesting or beautiful - and there's a lot of that here. It helps, of course, that Season is beautiful. If you're anything like me, you'll end up with an archive of far too many polaroids as you snap away at flowers, unusual architecture, or a tree that's catching the light in just the right way. The snap of the shutter and whirr of the photo emerging just becomes part of the game's glorious soundscape. Taking photographs is easy and filled with the retro charm of using a polaroid-esque camera. Riding the bike is always a joy, with you having to use L2 and R2 to pedal when you first set off or try to go up a hill, and then being able to enjoy the freefall when you've reached your stride. As you journey out from your hometown into the unknown, you're armed with your bike, along with a camera and an audio recorder that you'll use to document what you see and learn. Season is effectively a road trip game apart from your roads are quiet country paths that snake through stunning vistas and decaying urban landscapes, and your trip is as much about time as it is about distance. By adding one other player to the mix, Valve is able to craft puzzles that simply aren’t possible in the single player mode, as players must work in tandem to solve each room’s environmental brainteasers. While Portal 2’s cooperative mode doesn’t reach the delightful narrative heights of its single player campaign, it serves as a perfect complimentary piece that offers new twists on the game’s puzzle designs. At less than $20, Overcooked is a steal and will deliver hours of local multiplayer mayhem and fun (but mostly mayhem).Īlmost six years after its original release, there are still very few co-op experiences that rival the brain-busting puzzle action of Portal 2. Communication is so key to the experience, in fact, that Overcooked can only be played in local multiplayer, not online (although we’re not sure whether or not that was just an oversight on developer Ghost Town Games’ part). While early levels are relatively straightforward, Overcooked constantly throws curve balls at you and your friends, to the point where you will probably lose your cool with someone for failing to chop an onion in a timely fashion. Much like in a real kitchen, players must balance food prep, cooking, washing dishes, and plating and delivering the meals. It’s a deceptively simple gameplay concept, but in practice, it can turn into absolute pandemonium, especially when you add more players to the mix. Up to four players take control of chefs in a restaurant kitchen and are tasked with putting out customer orders as quickly as possible. Overcooked is arguably one of the best local co-op experiences available on current gen hardware and is the perfect sort of game for busting out at parties. As for which Lego game to play, it really just comes down to which franchise you enjoy the most, as TT Games always delivers on fan service whether they’re tackling Star Wars, Marvel, DC, or the many other popular brands that have been Legoized. While the Lego games can be enjoyed by just about everyone, one of their best features that doesn’t seem to get highlighted enough is that they are the perfect games for parents to play with their kids, as their mix of family-friendly content and easy-to-learn gameplay are a welcome respite from the many cooperative games out there that are not suitable for children (unless you own a Nintendo console, where they are in abundance). From the original Lego Star Wars all the way up to the toys-to-life experiment Lego Dimensions, TT Games has made sure that drop in, drop out co-op is a key component of the game. Still, not every game needs to strive for innovation and while many franchises try to rewrite the book with each subsequent release, the Lego games have remained a reliable source for local cooperative play. TT Games’ many Lego titles are the equivalent of video game comfort food, as you know that no matter what happens, each new game is going to play almost identically to the last one. That being said, we’d avoid the first game since it has the fewest features and song selection.Īlso, we’d be remiss if we didn’t give a shout out to The Beatles Rock Band, which remains a loving tribute to the legendary band and is notable for increasing the player count thanks to the inclusion of harmony vocal tracks. Harmonix did a pretty good job of carrying over songs to each subsequent release thanks to its impressive online store, so you really can’t go wrong with any entry in the franchise. At its heart, Rock Band is a celebration of music and its ability to bring people together, which certainly helps explain why it’s so much better in a group setting. Considering most people have likely played a Rock Band at this point, there’s really no point in discussing what makes it so good, but rather why. Although the plastic instruments genre has largely died out, franchises such as Rock Band still make for great party games, at least if you managed to hang onto all of those bulky peripherals. Still, there’s no reason to dig out Rock Band unless you have some friends play with, as the series becomes infinitely better when enjoyed with a group. No matter which browser you use, clearing the browser cache on Mac is pretty easy. 33300066304 Logo Ameba Icon Security Icon Security White Icon Privacy Icon Performance Icon Privacy Icon Security Icon Performance Icons/45/01 Security/Other-Threats Icons / 32 / Bloatware removal Icons / 32 / Registry Cleaner Icons / 32 / CleanUp Icons / Feature / 32 / Mac Icons / 32 / Browser cleanup Icons/32/01 Security/Malware Icons/32/01 Security/Viruses Icons/32/01 Security/Other-Threats Icons/32/01 Security/phishing Icons/32/01 Security/Scams Icons/32/01 Security/hacking Icons/32/01 Security/Security-tips Icons/32/01 Privacy/Privacy-tips Icons/32/01 Performance/Software Icons/32/01 Privacy/Identity-Protection Icons/32/01 Privacy/Digital-life Icons/32/01 Performance/Performance-tips Icons/32/01 Security/Passwords Icons/32/01 Security/Ransomware Icons/32/01 Security/Business Icons/32/02 Privacy/Browser Icons/32/02 Privacy/IP adress Icons/32/02 Privacy/VPN Icons/32/02 Privacy/Proxy Icons/32/02 Privacy/Streaming Icons/32/03 Performance/Celaning Icons/32/03 Performance/Drivers Icons/32/03 Performance/Gaming Icons/32/03 Performance/Hardware Icons/32/03 Performance/Speed Icons / 32 / Bloatware removal Icons / 32 / Registry Cleaner Win Icons / 32 / CleanUp Icons / Feature / 32 / Mac Icons / 32 / Browser cleanup Icons/60/02 Privacy/02_Privacy Icons/60/01 Security/01_Security Icons/60/03 Performance/03_Performance Icons/45/01 Security/phishing Icons/45/01 Security/Scams Icons/45/01 Security/hacking Icons/45/01 Security/Security-tips Icons/45/01 Privacy/Privacy-tips Icons/45/01 Performance/Software Icons/45/01 Privacy/Identity-Protection Icons/45/01 Privacy/Digital-life Icons/45/01 Performance/Performance-tips Icons/80/01 Security/phishing Icons/80/01 Security/Scams Icons/80/01 Security/hacking Icons/80/01 Security/Security-tips Icons/80/01 Privacy/Privacy-tips Icons/80/01 Performance/Software Icons/80/01 Privacy/Identity-Protection Icons/80/01 Privacy/Digital-life Icons/80/01 Performance/Performance-tips Icons/80/01 Security/IoT Icons/80/01 Security/Malware Icons/80/01 Security/Passwords Icons/80/01 Security/Ransomware Icons/80/01 Security/Viruses Icons/80/01 Security/Other-Threats Icons/80/03 Security/Business Icons/80/02 Privacy/Browser Icons/80/02 Privacy/IP adress Icons/80/02 Privacy/VPN Icons/80/02 Privacy/Proxy Icons/80/02 Privacy/Streaming Icons/80/03 Performance/Celaning Icons/80/03 Performance/Drivers Icons/80/03 Performance/Gaming Icons/80/03 Performance/Hardware Icons/80/03 Performance/Speed Icons/80/03 Performance/03_Performance Icons/80/02 Privacy/02_Privacy 5.2 Removal of Liz Cheney from House leadership.5 Republican censures following impeachment.4 Second impeachment of President Donald Trump.3.1 Capitol Police Emergency Assistance Act of 2021.2.2 Senate Committees on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and Rules and Administration.1 Federal indictment of Donald Trump (2020 election certification case). The effect on the counting of electoral votes.Suspensions from social media platforms related to the event and. In the House, the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol conducted an investigation that ran from June 30, 2021, through the end of the 117th Congress. The bill allowed "the chief of the United States Capitol Police to unilaterally request the assistance of the DC National Guard or Federal law enforcement agencies in emergencies without prior approval of the Capitol Police Board." The bill was passed by unanimous consent by both chambers of Congress, with the Senate passage taking place on December 13 and the House passage on December 14. On December 22, 2021, President Joe Biden (D) signed the Capitol Police Emergency Assistance Act of 2021 ( SB 3377). Some recommendations from the Senate report were made law. In the Senate, the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and the Committee on Rules and Administration released a report on June 8, 2021, reviewing the security, planning, and response failures to the breach. In Congress, both chambers tasked committees to review the event. There were several other noteworthy legislative and political responses to the Capitol breach throughout 20. Following the impeachment vote, six Republican senators and representatives were censured by their state parties, four were rebuked, and in May 2021 House Republicans voted to remove Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) from party leadership. Conviction required a two-thirds vote of senators present. Fifty-seven senators voted to convict, and 43 voted to acquit. One month later, on February 13, 2021, the Senate voted to acquit Trump. In the immediate aftermath of the Capitol breach, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump in a 232-197 vote on January 13, 2021. In short, if you’re an athlete who loves to grind, take a brief hiatus and learn to swim. After learning to glide through the water, I could appreciate the aerobic work that wasn’t as jarring on the joints as pounding the pavement on the run or grinding out hours on the bike. The combination of cold water, steady and consistent breathing, and an hour to think were invigorating. More than enjoying my workouts, I especially loved the feeling after a one-hour swim. I was still in lane 6 when I returned to practice, but now enjoying my workouts. With special drills, I learned about balance and rotation and how to unhook the anchor I was pulling through the pool. However, I steadily improved and became one with the water. But after weeks of struggle, the coach gently told me that I didn’t know how to swim and was only fighting the water.įrom that point, I went back to square one, and rather than swimming laps, I practiced floating. I persisted in Lane 6, believing that I would get better. I swam about two lengths before getting lapped and downgraded to lane 6.Īnd even among the slowest group, I was struggling to survive. I felt confident leading off the lane with the older and more portly group, but I immediately got my ass kicked. I couldn’t hop in with the best on Day 1, but I envisioned how I would humbly start in the middle with the common folk, and the coach would promptly send me up as she recognized my athleticism. I donned my Speedo and brand-new goggles, confidently strolled into my first practice and was instructed to get into one of six lanes based on my ability.Įveryone in Lane 1 was lean and over 6-foot tall. I was a good runner and could survive on the bike for that time, so I just had to apply my fitness to get through the water.Īs a lifeguard throughout High School, I knew “how” to swim and was comfortable in the water, but I knew I could use some training for the race, so I signed up for a local master swim club to own the 1.2-mile swim.
